Deus Vult: A Compendium of the Cross and Crescent

The Knight Brothers: Exclusively drawn from the European nobility. They wore the famous white mantle adorned with a red cross (added in 1147 by Pope Eugenius III). They were heavily armored shock cavalry.
The Sergeants: Drawn from the commoner classes. They wore black or brown mantles and served as light cavalry, infantry, blacksmiths, and builders. A sergeant could never become a knight, regardless of battlefield heroism.
The Chaplains: Ordained priests responsible for administering the sacraments, conducting masses, and hearing confessions for the brothers.
The Turcopoles: Indigenous mercenaries, often of mixed Greek/Arab or entirely Syrian descent, who fought as light cavalry and horse archers utilizing local tactics.
